The Alderwood Branch is hosting artwork from our Calligraphic Confederation Exhibition in celebration of Canada’s 150 years of Confederation. Historical, political, social, personal and poetic perspectives about our country are put to paper with traditional and contemporary lettering. October 2 – 31 , 2017.
In an informative presentation, Ramona Matthews imparts the history of Roman Cursive Writing, dated from about the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD. Archaeologic findings of ink on wafer thin wooden tablets found near Hadrian’s wall in Vindolanda were discussed, as well as the the more commonly found diptychs. The laymen’s mode of handwriting for graffiti, inventories, invitations and general communications was compared to the structure of our present alphabet.

Calligraphic Confederation opens to visitors at Neilson Park Creative Centre on May 25, 2017 at 9 am. Our annual member’s exhibition is celebrating Canada and Calligraphy in the Hall Gallery until June 11, 2017.
